Discover Umu Japanese&thai

Walking into Umu Japanese&thai for the first time at 2653 Bruce B Downs Blvd #120A, Wesley Chapel, FL 33544, United States, felt like discovering a neighborhood spot that already knew what it was doing. I’ve eaten my way through plenty of Japanese and Thai restaurants across Florida, from quick lunch counters to chef-driven kitchens, and this place lands comfortably in that sweet middle ground where quality, comfort, and consistency meet.

On my first visit, I came in during a busy dinner rush, which is usually the best test of a restaurant’s real rhythm. Orders were flying out of the kitchen, yet the staff stayed relaxed and attentive. That matters more than people realize. According to the National Restaurant Association, diners are 20% more likely to return to restaurants where service feels calm and knowledgeable, even during peak hours. That showed here. The server walked me through the menu without rushing, explaining the difference between traditional Japanese rolls and the Thai-inspired fusion options.

The menu itself is broad without being overwhelming. Sushi lovers will recognize familiar classics like California rolls and spicy tuna, but there’s also plenty of creativity layered in. One standout was a specialty roll that balanced fresh fish, crispy texture, and a light sauce that didn’t drown everything. From a professional standpoint, that balance is harder to achieve than it looks. The rice temperature, the cut of the fish, and timing all matter. The FDA’s food safety guidelines emphasize proper rice handling for sushi, and you can tell the kitchen here follows those standards carefully, both for taste and safety.

On the Thai side, the flavors lean authentic rather than overly sweet. I ordered a Thai curry on a later visit, and the spice level was adjustable in a way that actually respected heat instead of masking it. Research from food science journals often points out that proper spice balance enhances aroma and flavor perception, not just heat tolerance, and this dish proved that point. The herbs were fresh, the coconut milk wasn’t heavy, and the vegetables still had texture.

What really stands out is consistency. I’ve been back multiple times, once for takeout and once for a casual lunch, and the quality held steady. That’s something restaurant reviews often gloss over, but it’s critical. A study published by Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration found that consistency across visits has a stronger impact on long-term customer trust than novelty alone. This place clearly understands that. Whether dining in or grabbing food to go, the experience feels reliable.

The dining space itself is clean, modern, and comfortable without trying too hard. It works well for families, casual dates, or solo diners who just want a solid meal. The location in Wesley Chapel makes it convenient, especially for locals who don’t want to drive far for quality sushi or Thai food. Online reviews reflect that sentiment too, with many customers highlighting portion size, freshness, and friendly service as repeat-worthy traits.

There are a few limitations worth mentioning. During peak hours, wait times can stretch a bit, and parking can feel tight depending on the time of day. That said, those are common issues in popular shopping plazas and not unique to this restaurant. From what I’ve seen, the staff does a good job managing expectations and keeping things moving.

Overall, this is the kind of restaurant that earns its reputation through steady execution rather than hype. It respects traditional Japanese techniques, honors Thai flavor profiles, and adapts both to what local diners enjoy. For anyone browsing menus, checking locations, or reading reviews before choosing their next meal, this spot delivers exactly what it promises, and it does so with confidence you can taste.

  • Amazing Atmosphere, Amazing Food, and Extraordinary Service. Came here w family to have dinner and it did not disappoint. We had the steak, pork and chicken skewers - Amazing. My brother said the pork skewer is the best in Tampa. The steak was A1. I ordered spicy tuna roll and lemon grass spicy soup and was not disappointed! I would strongly recommend the skewers, coconut sake, as well as the green curry. Shoutout to the owner for coming out, showing love and making recommendation. Definitely plan to come back. Lastly, the decor is amazing. I personally love the themed roses growing from the room top and hanging over the tables. Great spot for any event, but highly recommended for dates

  • We weren't in the mood to cook on a Friday night, so we decided to visit Umu Japanese & Thai Restaurant for dinner. Although we didn't have a reservation, the wait time just 10-15 minutes before we were seated. The ambiance was lively and welcoming, filled with people enjoying their meals. We were greeted by our server, Jourdyn, who brought us water and menus right away. After chatting with Jourdyn and going over the menu, we ordered the Smokey Dragon and Typhoon sushi rolls, Crab Croquette as our appetizer, Pad Thai for our Thai entree, and a Thai Iced Tea to go with our meal. The Thai Iced Tea arrived first, it was flavorful, and made well. Our appetizer, the Crab Croquette, came after and had a rich, crab filling, a great way to start the meal. Then came our entrees. The sushi rolls were beautifully presented and delicious, especially the Typhoon Roll, which was crispy and full of flavor and definitely the standout of the night. The Smokey Dragon was also fresh and well-balanced. Pad Thai was full of flavor, with perfectly cooked noodles and tender chicken that made it a comforting and satisfying dish. Overall, the food was flavorful and satisfying -- a great spot for both Japanese and Thai cuisine.

  • This restaurant is beautiful! Very welcoming and clean. The food is very good! I ordered a few rolls to share as well as the takoyaki which were amazing!! The dessert was surprisingly great!! We ordered the creme brûlée which had a nice thick outer shell perfectly caramelized. Service was good and catered to all our needs without being overly invasive. Overall great experience.

  • Fabulous, sophisticated yet casual cool atmosphere inside, and the outside area is laid back with tables and umbrellas. Everything was delicious from the miso soup to the various sushi rolls which were made to perfection. They have lunch specials that are fresh, tasty, and prepared by chefs that k ow what they are doing. What a pleasure. Our server Emily was friendly and so helpful. Excited to come back!

  • Consistently tasty and quick. Go here before/after doctor's appointments at Advent and we can be confident that it's reasonably priced, portions are fair and we can be in and out quickly. Lunch specials are a still a value despite seeing others shrink. Ambience is dark and rather romantic for lunch but perfect for a couple's date night. Nothing super special but I do appreciate consistency.

  • I had the Thai Fried Rice with chicken and it was absolutely amazing! The flavors were perfectly balanced—savory, just the right amount of seasoning, and the chicken was tender and delicious. The portion size was generous for it to be lunch and left me completely satisfied. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Definitely one of the best Thai food experiences I’ve had—I’ll be coming back for more!

  • Umu is one of those places that quietly earns repeat visits. The Smokey Dragon roll hits all the right notes. Rich, fresh fish balanced with crunch, subtle smoke, citrus, and a clean finish. The Rising Sun brings a gentle heat and brightness from the lemon that cuts through beautifully. Everything tasted intentional and well composed. No filler, no shortcuts. Just solid sushi, done right. Easy recommendation if you care about quality and flavor.

  • With amazing sushi spots like UMU in Tampa Bay area, there is no need to drive all the way to Orlando for sushi anymore! If you are a nigiri lover (pieces if raw fish over rice), like me, then I've got the spot for you. Brought to you with the same quality and elegance as their other business, Sorbo. With only have the highest skilled chefs and ingredients. They also have delicious salads, cooked food, and Thai dishes. They also have an omakase that is actually entertaining and customized, requires reservations. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Romantic date night vibes and atmosphere. Contact them to inquire about their omakase service with reservation. It is the best service that I've had in Tampa Bay for omakase and very customized. The head chef, Will, was trained by some of the best Japanese chefs in the business.
